Week 3

Weather has co-operated so this week the demolition was completed, the site cleaned up, the footings were all excavated and the framing of the footings was completed enough that inspection by the Building Inspector is scheduled for next Monday morning.

Tyler breaking up the concrete pads with a jackhammer

Harry and Jon discussing what to do with the concrete

This corner will have the footings flush to the rock which will dictate the height of the cottage floor

It looks imposing but it all makes sense

Before we know it we will start to see foundation walls and soon after real main floor walls

Week of Sept 12-16

This how we started the week

The demolition is now done
and we are excavating to get to the rock base for the footings.
The following pictures are as of 3:00 on Friday

We could not save the old slab as it was cracked and not thick enough
to support the new in-floor heating and the interior walls,
so Jon broke it all up with the mini-excavator
and Jake and Pete hauled it way

There are a number of trees that have to come down (flagged in red),
and a number that we are trying to save (flagged in yellow)
A final decision will have to be made after we have pinned
the exact location of the footings.

The orange stakes are where we think the corners will be.

Here is our guide post which will determine the height of the new floor
based on the old cottage

A very productive week.

The Upper Floor is No More

On Tuesday the demolition of the old cottage began.  The first step was to remove all the items material that was identified to be saved.

Then on Wednesday a crew started to remove anything that could be salvaged or recycled to reduce the material sent to the landfill.  They removed all the metal in the cottage such as ductwork, copper piping, aluminum soffit and fascia, copper wiring, windows, etc.

On Thursday the guys started removing the drywall and siding.

Once the siding and drywall on the upper floor was all gone, Jon attached a chain to the roof and using his truck, he pulled the roof and the entire second floor structure down to the ground

Then Jon, Tyler, and Jake began taking the roof apart using sledge hammers and saw-alls.

By Friday afternoon two large bins had been filled and most of the roof and second floor were gone.

Next week will see the completion of the demolition and the beginning of the excavation and framing of the footings for the new cottage.

Hopefully all the old memories have been packed away because the process of Building the New Dreams will begin

The Adventure begins

Labour Day Week-end saw the last days for the Collins' "old" cottage and this week the first steps toward a brand new cottage were initiated

Singer Construction has been retained to build the new cottage.  The schedule calls for the new cottage to be ready for occupancy on the 2012 Victoria Day week-end

We intend to use this blog to keep the Collins updated on what is happening with their new cottage.  We hope to post weekly updates with picture and highlights of the progress.

This is what the old cottage was

And this is what the "new" will be
